In a buyer’s eyes, a dark corner quietly takes square footage away from a room because a corner left in shadow doesn’t read as part of the space. When you put your house on the market and showings start, it’s one of the simplest problems to solve, yet sellers rarely hear about it from their Realtor. Before buyers walk through, turn on every light in the house.

Light every space, closets included. Every single light should be on during a showing. Closets, crawl spaces, and the basement all count. A house feels completely different when no lights are on, and many Realtors won’t switch them all on for buyers.

Dark corners shrink the room. Consider the corner where a lamp sits unlit. Turn that light on, and the corner pops instead of fading into shadow. Once it’s lit, buyers read it as part of the room, and the room looks bigger.
